Dalton McGuinty is Ontario's 24th Premier. In the provincial election of 2003, Dalton McGuinty led the Liberal party to a majority government. He and his party earned a second consecutive majority on October 10, 2007. He has represented the riding of Ottawa South as its MPP since 1990.
During his first term of office, Premier McGuinty's government reduced class sizes and medical wait times, improved Ontario's infrastructure, and attracted billions in new investment. As a result, our province's public services are stronger today, and we are better prepared to face today's challenges
Now in his second term of office, Premier McGuinty remains committed to building a stronger Ontario by investing in our greatest asset — our people. That's why the government has laid out a plan to strengthen Ontario's economy, helping families in the short term while building a strong future. It includes skills and training for our workers, cutting taxes for our businesses, partnering with key sectors to attract investment, improving our infrastructure and staying on top of innovation.
Born on July 19, 1955, Dalton McGuinty was raised in Ottawa's Alta Vista neighbourhood. One of ten children in a close family, he credits his parents with teaching him the values and ethics that guide him as Premier. Dalton's mother, Elizabeth, is a retired nurse living in Ottawa. His father, Dalton Sr., was a teacher and professor who served as the Ottawa South MPP until he passed away in 1990. Dalton shares his father's deep belief in democracy, integrity and accountability in government.
Before entering politics, Dalton McGuinty practised law in Ottawa. He has a law degree from the University of Ottawa and a science degree from McMaster University in Hamilton. He met his wife, Terri, an elementary school teacher, when they were both still high school students in Ottawa. They have been married for more than 28 years and have four grown children.
