Margarett Best was elected to the Ontario legislature in 2007. Before joining government, Best ran a law practice specializing in real estate and family law. She also served on the College Compensations and Appointments Council, which recognizes outstanding graduates of Ontario’s college system. She is an alumnus of the University of Toronto at Scarborough and Osgoode Hall Law School, and she holds a Mutual Funds Certificate from the Investment Funds Institute of Canada.
Best volunteered with the Shouters National Evangelical Spiritual Baptist Ministries, an organization helping underprivileged, unemployed young people. She was a board member of both the Black Business and Professional Association and Sheena’s Place Breakfast Committee. She also served on the Ontario Provincial Police Advisory Committee, working on diversity issues in the community.
Best won the 2006 Matilda Van Cooten Award for Excellence in Single Parenting at the African Canadian Achievement Awards. She was recently nominated for the Lincoln Alexander Medal, given to an Ontario lawyer for longstanding and outstanding contribution to the community in Ontario.
Best is originally from Jamaica. She has three children.
