There’s been a lot of talk about the economy, but I want you to know we’ve got a great foundation here in Ontario.
I’m on the upper deck of this brand new double-decker bus.
I think these things are really neat.
I feel like a kid on them.
I want to go immediately to the top level.
I thought I’d take the opportunity to talk to you a little about the economy.
I know there’s been a lot of talk about the economy, but I want you to know we’ve got a great foundation here in Ontario to continue to grow this economy.
We’ve got a great plan to get us there.
Part of that plan is to invest in roads, bridges and public transit.
That’s exactly what this bus is all about.
In fact, we’re investing $1 billion in roads, bridges, public transit and affordable housing, as well.
Now when you make that kind of investment that’s going to create 10,000 jobs …
For people who work in these areas build those roads, help us make public transit, and the like.
The other part of our plan that we’re really going to emphasize now is skills training.
The fact of the matter is some people are losing their jobs.
And we want to make sure that when they get a new job, they don’t take the first job — unless they want to.
We don’t want them to take only a job that helps them kind of get by.
We’d like to get them a job that helps them get ahead.
So, through our budget, we’re going to be investing not only in roads, bridges and transit, we’re also going to be investing in better training opportunities …
Longer-term training opportunities, so people get additional skills to get the better kinds of jobs that make more opportunity for them and their families.
So it’s true.
We’ve got some challenging economic times, but we’ve got a great plan to get us through this.
You know, you and I Ontarians, we’ve been through these kinds of things in our history before, and I am confident that by working together, we’ll get through this time as well.
