What Matters To You Today

Many questions about the harmonized sales tax have been submitted by Ontarians. Here are the answers to your questions and links to where you can learn more about the harmonized sales tax.

What is the harmonized sales tax?

Two sales taxes merged into one. Right now, you go shopping, you pay 5% GST and 8% PST. Starting July 1, 2010, you'll only see the harmonized sales tax – 13%.

Benefits

The harmonized sales tax will make Ontario more attractive to businesses.

By merging two taxes with different rules into one sales tax with one set of rules, we’re reducing red tape – and creating new incentives for Ontario businesses to grow and for new businesses to locate here.

Exemptions

Point-of-sale rebates will be introduced for children’s clothing, diapers, car seats, and books. Learn more about point-of-sale exemptions.
